The HYROX Training Program: Specific Training, Better Results
By One Playground
The global fitness phenomenon of HYROX has taken the world by storm, blending running and functional fitness into one incredible challenge. It’s an event that tests your strength, endurance, and mental grit. But we also know that stepping onto that race floor requires more than just general fitness; it demands specialised preparation.
That’s why we’ve developed a dedicated HYROX short course to give you the confidence and skills to not just finish but also have a successful and rewarding race day. To build this program, we partnered with an expert who lives and breathes the sport: Georgia Robson, who is not only one of our top trainers and coach mentors at One Playground, but she’s also a HYROX Race Director responsible for delivering perfect race experiences across Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Her inside knowledge is the secret ingredient to our course, designed to get you to the finish line with confidence and a new personal best.
So if you’re training for HYROX Melbourne, Auckland or any other city, this is the course for you.
Why is HYROX-Specific Training a Game-Changer?
One of the most unique aspects of HYROX is its consistency. The race format is the same every single time, no matter where in the world you compete. It’s always 8 kilometres of running, broken up by eight distinct functional workout stations. This predictability is your greatest advantage, and it’s why specific training is not just beneficial, it’s essential. Knowing exactly what’s coming allows you to train with purpose. You would be doing yourself a disservice by not preparing for the known.
Georgia explains how a good race often comes down to knowing how to best tackle the stations, how to split them up if you’re doing doubles, where you might get penalised, and how to pace yourself. If you have practised the skills and trained the movement patterns, you will be more equipped – mentally and physically – on race day.
Enter the One Playground HYROX Short Course
The ultimate goal of this course is to equip you with all the tools necessary for a successful race. While we certainly focus on building your overall fitness and endurance, explains Georgia, a great race performance goes far beyond just being strong or a good runner. It’s about strategy, efficiency, and knowing how to handle the unique demands of each segment.
Each week of the course will have a specific focus. We’ll break down each of the eight movements and stations, dedicating time to mastering the technique and mechanics. Then, we’ll progressively combine these skills into challenging workouts that simulate the physical stress and flow of an actual HYROX race. This structure ensures you build a solid foundation before putting everything together.
The HYROX Short Course Overview
- Pacing Strategies: Learn how to manage your energy across the entire race. We’ll discuss when to push the pace, when to conserve energy on the run, and how to approach each station to avoid burnout.
- Station Tactics: A successful race is often won in the details. We’ll explore how to tackle each station efficiently. For those competing in “doubles” (teams of two), we’ll strategise the best way to split the work for maximum effectiveness.
- Penalty Awareness: Nobody wants to do extra burpees! We will teach you the movement standards for each exercise so you can avoid getting penalised for “no-reps” and wasting precious energy and time.
- Smart Transitions: The time between finishing a run and starting a station, or vice versa, is what we call the “roxzone.” We’ll work on making these transitions seamless to shave valuable seconds off your final time.
Additional Training
To build the necessary endurance, Georgia recommends supplementing the course with at least two running sessions on your own each week. These runs are crucial for preparing your body for the 8 kilometres of running involved in the race.
The Added Advantage
When you join our HYROX course, you get more than just a training plan. You become part of a supportive community working toward a common goal, with unparalleled expert guidance.
- Expert-Led: Georgia’s role as a HYROX Race Director provides our members with priceless insights into race day logistics, standards, and strategy. You can ask questions and get answers directly from the source. We also have two other incredible trainers leading the course, all avid HYROX-ers themselves – Anthony, Enif and Asia.
- Purpose-Built Training: Every drill, workout, and coaching cue is designed with one thing in mind: making you a better HYROX athlete.
- Community and Motivation: There’s nothing more powerful than training alongside others who share your ambition. You’ll find encouragement, accountability, and a great atmosphere in every session.
- Find Your Training Partners: Our course is the perfect place to meet like-minded members. Many participants find their future doubles partners and training buddies right here at the club.
